NSAIDS Preferred Treatment for Chronic Pain

New research completed on almost 700,000 patient related visits regarding non-malignant chronic pain found that almost half of all pain related visits involved primary care physicians, and that in 97 to 99 percent of all cases, physicians prefer to prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications as a treatment for chronic pain, as compared to acetaminophen, which was prescribed at a rate of 4 percent, and opioid analgesics, at a rate of 10.5 percent .  The authors found that 45 percent of pain related visits involved primary care physicians and only 0.12 percent involving pain specialists. From this data,  they concluded that the demand for pain services greatly exceeded the capacity pain specialists are able to provide.
