For teenagers suffering from chronic pain, there are strategies that can help manage the condition. Dr. Barbara Bruce notes that withdrawing from school and other activities, though something that may seem beneficial by allowing rest to ease pain, can contribute to a lack of routine, irregular sleep, low and low activity, and will only cause a larger sense of isolation, all of which are things that can increase pain. Stressing the importance of routine, Dr. Bruce argues a healthy diet aids energy and that exercise can lower stress and cause the body to release natural painkillers.
