How much pain one feels after a car wreck may be based on genes.
The University of North Carolina did two studies based on data from 948 adult car wreck victims. They found that inherited genetic variations affected the pain response of these people. This happened immediately after the wreck as well as six weeks later.
The reason this is important is that people who experience chronic pain are often told it’s “in their head”; therefore, they don’t get the treatment they need. But this study shows there is a biological basis for pain.
Hopefully, this will lead to more respect for chronic pain sufferers, and also maybe lead to some new treatments for pain.
