Toxin may provide permanent treatment for chronic pain

Reiniferatoxin (RTX), a toxin found in a Moroccan “cactuslike plant” may be able to permanently treat localized pain. By targeting and killing only the specif neurons that produce a protein TRPV1, which cause an inflammatory sensation, and leaving other tissue and pain-sensing nerves unharmed, this compound may be able to provide a solution for suffers of chronic pain.

After promising results in trails with dogs, whose pain mechanisms are very similar to humans, this painkiller has recently begun human trails. Though its potential to disable feelings of pain may be problematic, in extreme cases this compound may provide much needed relief.
