Antidepressant treats chronic pain

The only antidepressant approved by the FDA for chronic musculoskeletal pain, Cymbalta, a near-last resort drug for patients with depression, blocks pain signals from traveling among the body, spine, and brain.

Though the drug is expensive – it can cost $50 for a month of treatment with insurance, up to $300 without – the patent will expire by the end of the year, allowing the production of generic versions of the drug.

Cymbalta has been approved as a treatment for diabetic nerve pain, depression, anxiety, and fibromyalgia.
