Spending time in day care might may reduce the amount of emotional problems faced by the children of depressed mothers, a Canadian study suggests. Depression is estimated to affect 30-40 percent of mothers of childbearing age. The study found that 12 percent of children without depressed mothers faced emotional problems, and of children with depressed mothers, the ones who did not receive regular outside childcare faced emotional problems at a rate of 32 percent, as opposed to the 7 percent of those who were in care.
