According to one doctor speaking at this year’s aptly named PAINWeek conference in Las Vegas. According to Dr. Gary W. Jay, MD, FAAPM, a pain management specialist from North Carolina, physicians should stop thinking of Fibro as a diagnosis of last resort, instead focusing on the American College of Rheumatology ‘s three diagnostic criteria:
- Widespread pain index greater than 7 and symptom severity scale score greater than 5 or a WPI between 3-6 and an SS score greater than 9;
- Symptoms that have been present at a consistent level for a minimum of 3 months; and
- Lack of other disorder that could explain the pain.
With increased awareness among doctors of current diagnostic criteria, more people can get properly diagnosed earlier on. This can lead to not only better access to treatment for these patients but, ultimately, greater pressure to find more effective treatments for all who suffer from this condition.
