Insulin and Sleep Deprivation

Insulin sensitivity in the body’s peripheral tissue, including fat cells, is reduced by short-sleep deprivation. This leads to an increase in the risk for Type II diabetes and other metabolic disorders.

This information comes from a first of its kind study, published in the October 16 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine. The study operated with strict control of caloric intake and physical activity, despite sleep duration.
