Opioid use for chronic pain risky

New York Times reporter Barry Meier, author of “Pain Killer: A ‘Wonder’ Drug’s Trail of Addiction and Death” has released a new e-book “A World of Hurt: Fixing Pain Medicine’s Biggest Mistake.” Meier’s first book focused on the potential abuse of OxyContin, and his new book argues that, as a treatment for chronic pain, opioid drugs are often ineffective, and pose a risk for addiction and other health problems. Over the last decade, the number of annual deaths caused by overdose on narcotic pain killers has quadrupled.
