Sleep Affects Gene Activity

Fibro Daily March 2, 2013

A lack of sleep can lead to the following health problems:

  • obesity
  • cognitive impairment
  • heart disease

Sleep affects health in other ways, too. For one, it can make the genes less active. From a new study by :

“The research, conducted at the University of Surrey, England, has revealed that insufficient sleep – less than six hours a night – affects the activity of over 700 of our genes.

These genes are associated with controlling response to stress, immunity, and inflammation.”

The following processes suffer from a lack of sleep, and show that more tests in relation to sleep and overall health are warranted:

  • chromatin modification
  • gene-expression regulation
  • immune responses
  • inflammatory responses
  • macromolecular metabolism
  • stress responses
