Study Finds Doctors Overuse Painkillers and Expensive Scans

Fibro Daily July 31, 2013

A new study has found that doctors use expensive scans and narcotic pain killers for treating chronic neck and back pain in lieu of  the treatment prescribed by national guidelines. National guidelines state that patients with routine back pain should be treated with a combination of physical therapy and painkillers such as aspirin and acetaminophen, and that more serious treatments should only be used in rare cases.

The study looked at 24,000 U.S medical visits and found that the use of aspirin-like painkillers fell from 37 percent to 24.5 percent from 2000-2010, while the use of potentially addictive narcotics rose from 19 percent to 29 percent.
