Two-thirds of patients with depression receive ineffective treatment.

A global survey on depression has found that two thirds of patients with depression receive inadequate treatment. Despite generating an estimated $5.6 billion in the US, Europe, and Japan, drugs for depression fail to treat one third of all patients and only partially relieve symptoms of another third. Because the business is so lucrative, business intelligence providers estimate that a drug would have the potential to generate annual sales of $1 billion if it could quicken treatment effects, eliminate typical side effects, and alleviate the symptoms for the one-third of patients with treatment-resistant depression.
