A new robotic wheelchair can climb stairs as well as maneuver obstacles, two things that have puzzled wheelchair designers and users for years and years. Finally, engineers from the Chiba Institute of Technology, led by associate professor Shuro Nakajima, have found a solution. Call it a wheelchair that doesn’t really know what it is. It often uses wheels, but when faced with a challenge, the wheels turn into legs.
Confusion can be beneficial indeed.
