Anemia in Fibromyalgia Patients

Fibro Daily September 20, 2012

Anemia frequently appears in fibromyalgia patients and women. It means there is little iron in the blood.

It begins with a lack of healthy red blood cells. These red blood cells give the body energy to complete tasks. Without this energy, exhaustion occurs, signaling anemia.

Symptoms of anemia include:

  • depression
  • dizziness/fainting
  • feeling cold
  • shortness of breath
  • loss of concentration
  • pale skin
  • weakness

So if you are a fibromyalgia patient who feels extra run down lately, make sure to ask the doctor to test you for anemia instead of assuming the exhaustion stems from fibromyalgia. Anemia needs to be treated if that is the problem. All it takes to diagnose it is a simple blood test. The treatment will depend on what causes your anemia, but it usually requires medication or dietary supplements.
