Dr. Julie Chen probably sounds different than most doctors when she discusses how to treat Fibromyalgia patients. She believes that each patient must be treated for their specific symptom set, but that there are also commonalities among patients that speak to underlying causes. For example, Dr. Chen looks at inflammation levels in the body, thyroid, adrenal and hormonal status. While she is working on addressing root causes, she is also addressing symptoms with treatments like soft tissue therapy, acupuncture, and others. “Ultimately, our bodies are machines” says Chen, and we need to maintain them and feed them premium fuel. So healthy organ function, a balanced endocrine system, and removal of sources of inflammation should be the focus of treatment. Dr. Chen practices integrative medicine at her clinic in San Jose California.
