Theory: The Viral Link Between Fibromyalgia and IBS

Fibro Daily October 19, 2012

Dr. William “Skip” Pridgen may have found a way to treat fibromyalgia and irritable bowl syndrome (IBS) by connecting the two to a common viral source.

Dr. Pidgen believes fibromyalgia and IBS are caused by herpes virus simplex 1. Working with patients who suffer chronic pain and IBS has given him some new insight into using anti-viral and anti-inflammatory drugs to treat both conditions. He believes the virus is activated in times of stress in both fibromyalgia and IBS.

Anti-viral combined with anti-inflammatory drugs relieved the IBS in one group of his patients, as well as their other pain symptoms.

Virologist Carol Duffy will be part of the study. She has made tremendous strides in the study of viral agents.
